Ultrastructural and Immunohistochemical Studies of the Histogenesis of Ewing's Sarcoma and Related Tumors

Abstract
Histogenesis of Ewing's sarcoma and extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma is still disputed despite of many investigations. In an attempt to clarify these problems, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies were done on 10 cases of Ewing's sarcoma
and 1
case of extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma.
@ES The results are as follows :
@EN 1. The ages of 10 cases of Ewing's sarcoma ranged from 7 to 39 years with an average of 19.8 years.
2. On ultrastructural studies, average 77.5% of tumor cell nuclei were spherical in shape and all cases had abundant cytoplasmic glycogen granules, but no lipid vacuoles
3. Ewing's sarcomas were positive to neuron-specific enolase in 63%, S-100 protein in 25%, neuron cell surface antigen in 50%, and neurofilament in 37.5%.
4. Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma was negative to neuron-specific enolase, S-100 protein, neuron cell surface antigen, and neurofilament.
These immunohistochemical and electron microscopic results suggest that histogenetic origin of Ewing's sarcoma is probably primitive neuroectodermal cell.
